Explore Fable's towns and villages: interact with NPCs, buy items, get married, and purchase buildings. Learn about attractiveness, scariness, and crime.

Buying Items

Prices for items vary based on shop stock and your Guile level. Most traders will only buy items they are interested in selling, though they may pay more for specific wanted items. You can profit by buying low from one trader and selling high to another who lacks the item, but profit is reduced if the item is already in stock. Increasing your Guile level decreases prices and increases profit margin by approximately 3.5 percent per rank.

Interaction With NPCs (Non-Player Characters)

Fable allows you to start relationships with and even kill most NPCs (Non-Player Characters). Expressions are a key way your character interacts with NPCs, with special expressions awarded for high Renown and based on your Morality (good or evil alignment).

Attractiveness

Your Attractiveness stat influences how people of the opposite (and sometimes same) sex perceive you. High Attractiveness can lead to people falling in love, making it easier to get a spouse. Low Attractiveness may result in people laughing at you. This stat can be altered by purchasing new haircuts, facial hair, clothes, and tattoos.

Scariness

This stat determines how quickly people flee from you. Wearing intimidating clothing, getting a wicked haircut, and acquiring tattoos can increase your Scariness. Dressing like a cult member can also have this effect.

Getting Married

To get married, you must first find an NPC (non-player character — anyone the game controls, not you) attracted to you, indicated by a hovering heart above their head which grows larger with increased attraction. You can increase attraction by talking, giving gifts, and flirting (a Renown-awarded expression). When the relationship is high enough, the heart will become transparent, signaling the NPC is ready to marry. You must then buy a ring and a house. Wedding Rings are available early in Bowerstone South, and later in Oakvale, Knothole Glade, and Hook Coast. Fake Wedding Rings are not recommended. Giving the ring to the NPC turns their heart yellow, and they will propose. Upon acceptance, the heart becomes a golden ring. Your spouse will sleep in your home. Having sex is possible by talking and flirting enough when both are home, resulting in a black screen with moaning noises. The game tracks the number of times you have sex. You can marry multiple times in different cities. Keeping spouses happy through gifts and conversation is crucial; neglect or abuse can lead to divorce. Houses can be sold or rented out.

Killing NPCs

You can kill NPCs in towns that allow weapons, but this will attract guards. Killing a shop owner allows you to purchase their shop (which is very expensive) and rent it out. Killing all inhabitants of a house allows you to buy it to live in or rent out. Regular villagers (NPCs) respawn (be brought back to life at a checkpoint after death) after a few game-days. Guards respawn infinitely after being attacked while you are inside a town. Mercenaries rarely respawn, especially if sacrificed to Skorm.

Buying Buildings

Killing all inhabitants of a shop or house makes it available for purchase. You can then buy these buildings to use as a marital home or rent them out. Renting out buildings is generally more profitable if you are not married. Furnishing them can increase rental profit. Shops are expensive but provide rent money collected outside and an owner's discount. Buildings can be sold back for their purchase price. Killing multiple people at once may cause villagers to scream and run from you upon your return. If a town does not allow weapons, you can lure the owners outside to kill them and then return to buy their buildings.

Crime

Stealing items or killing NPCs is possible, but be aware that guards will pursue you if they witness the act or if an alarm is sounded.

Tips
  • Focus on increasing your Guile level to maximize profits from trading.
  • Use expressions to build relationships with NPCs for marriage prospects.
  • Consider the long-term profit of renting out purchased buildings.
  • Be mindful of the consequences of crime, such as increased guard attention.
