Fabric is a bit of a later-game material. To get it, you'll need to complete a quest for the Hunter that sends you east of Lapis. There, you'll acquire the Loom. Once you have the Loom, you can turn Linen into Fabric. So, yeah, you'll need a good amount of Linen first!

Getting Linen:

You should already be familiar with Linen if you've progressed through the Hunter's quests in Revelwood. Linen is crafted from Flax. This means you'll want to make sure you have a solid stockpile of Flax, as you'll need it for both Linen and then for turning into Fabric later.
