Need to level up and gear up in Dragon Quest II? This guide covers the best grinding spots, essential equipment purchases, and recommended levels before tackling the Tower of the Moon.

Alright, so we're about to head into the Tower of the Moon, and honestly, it's pretty tough at our current levels. It's time for a good old-fashioned grinding session to beef up the party and get some much-needed gold. Don't worry, we'll make sure you're ready!

Where to Grind:

You've got a couple of options here. You can hang out near Dirkandor and fight some Metal Slimes, which are great for experience but don't drop much gold. Or, you can Zoom over to Slewse. From there, you can either fight some tougher monsters right around town, or head into the first floor of the Tower of the Moon, which is just south of town. I really recommend the Slewse area, especially the Tower of the Moon entrance, because we desperately need gold for some new gear.

Gear Up!

  • First up, let's aim to earn 16000G. Once you've got that, Zoom to Burrowell. We're going to buy an Aurora Blade for the Hero. This sword is pretty neat because if you use it as an item in battle, it'll cast Dazzle on all enemies, which can really help clear out groups.
  • Next, we need to earn another 21500G. Head back to Slewse or Burrowell to pick up a Power Shield for the Prince. Equip this and sell his old Leather Shield. The cool thing about the Power Shield is that if you use it in battle, it casts Midheal on the party member equipped with it, giving you a free heal! Eventually, you'll want to get these for everyone, but let's focus on the Prince for now.
  • If you can swing it, try to grab a second Power Shield. You can give it to the Hero, but don't equip it since Erdrick's Shield offers better defense. Instead, keep it in your inventory to use as an item in battle for HP restoration. If you can't afford it yet, no worries, we can come back to it.

Level Goals:

While we're grinding for gold, let's also aim for these levels:

  • Hero: Level 28
  • Prince: Level 26 (At level 25, he learns Kabuff, which is a lifesaver for boosting physical defense!)
  • Princess: Level 21 (At level 21, she gets Kaboom, a powerful spell that hits all enemies for good damage, though it costs 8 MP.)

Heading to the Tower:

Once you've got the gear and hit these levels, you should be in a much better spot to tackle the Tower of the Moon. From Slewse, just head south and use your Ship to cross the river. You're almost there!
