Learn how to craft Runewords in Diablo II: Resurrected. Discover the rules for rune order, socket count, and base item requirements for powerful Runewords.
To create a Runeword, you’ll need all the component Runes and a proper base item to socket them into. Adding one Rune will merely bestow its effects to the item it’s socketed into, but if you insert several Runes in the correct order, into the correct base item, with the exact right number of sockets, you’ll create a Runeword much more powerful than the sum of its component Runes.
- 1Gather all the necessary Runes for your desired Runeword.
- 2Find a base item that is compatible with the Runeword and has the exact number of sockets required.
- 3Insert the Runes into the base item in the specific order required for the Runeword.
- The target item must have exactly the correct number of sockets for the Runeword. Putting runes in an item with too many or too few sockets will not create a Runeword.
- The Runes must be placed in the correct order. The order is not interchangeable.
- Some Runewords are very specific about what gear they will work in. For example, [Insight] requires a 4-socket polearm or stave, and spears will not work. [Heart of the Oak] only functions in maces and staves, not hammers.
- Finding a suitable base item can be troublesome due to specific requirements. For example, the Spirit Runeword can only be created in 4-socket, one-handed swords (Broad Swords, Crystal Swords, Long Swords, and their variants) or 4-socket shields (Aegis, Monarch, Ward).
- Weapons will not have a sufficient iLv to spawn with 4-sockets until Nightmare difficulty.
- 4-socket shields will start spawning around Act 3 in Hell difficulty. Paladin shields with 4-sockets are more common.
- It’s worth hunting for a good base item, given the rarity of some Runes.
A Runeword item with properties much more powerful than the sum of its component Runes.
