Hey there! So, you've probably stumbled across some gear in Diablo II: Resurrected that looks a bit different, maybe with a weird name or just a feeling that it's special. These are Ethereal items, and they're a pretty interesting part of the game's loot system. Let's break down what makes them tick and whether they're worth your attention.

Most of the gear you'll find, except for things like set items, bows, crossbows, rings, and amulets, has a small 5% chance to roll as Ethereal. When this happens, the item gets some pretty significant buffs, but also some drawbacks.

• Damage and Defense Boost: Ethereal items get a whopping 50% increase to their base damage (for weapons) or defense (for armor) compared to their normal counterparts. That's a huge jump!
• Lowered Requirements: You'll find that Ethereal items have their Strength and Dexterity requirements reduced by 10 each. This can make some powerful gear accessible earlier than you might expect.
• Durability Takes a Hit: This is the big downside. Ethereal items have their durability cut in half, plus one. So, an item with 20 durability would only have 11 if it's Ethereal. This doesn't affect the quantity of thrown items, though.
• Cannot Be Repaired: And here's the kicker – you can't repair Ethereal items at vendors or even with the Horadric Cube. Once their durability hits zero, they're gone forever.

So, an Ethereal item is kind of a double-edged sword. The boosted stats and lower requirements are awesome, but that limited durability can be a real bummer, especially if you find a killer unique item that rolls Ethereal. Imagine finding a Harlequin Crest only to have it be Ethereal – pretty painful!

The only way to truly preserve an Ethereal item is by socketing a Zod rune into it. But honestly, Zod runes are so incredibly rare that you're usually better off just trying to find another non-Ethereal version of the item.

However, there are some exceptions that make Ethereal items incredibly valuable:

• Naturally Indestructible Items: Some unique items, like the Ethereal Edge pictured above, come with the 'Indestructible' modifier built-in. For these, being Ethereal is pure upside – no durability worries at all!
• 'Replenishes Quantity' Items: Thrown items that have 'Replenishes Quantity' (like Titan's Revenge javelins) aren't really hurt by being Ethereal. Their stock just keeps regenerating, making Ethereal versions of these highly sought after.
• 'Replenishes Durability' Armor: Armor with 'Replenishes Durability' (like Skullder's Ire) can also mitigate the Ethereal drawback. They'll self-repair, but you still need to be careful. If they hit 0 durability, they'll break permanently, so it's a bit of a race against time, though it should be very hard to lose them this way.
• Mercenary Gear: This is a huge one! Items equipped on your mercenary don't lose durability. So, an Ethereal Vampire Gaze might be useless for you, but your mercenary can wear it forever. This also makes Ethereal elite polearms (like Ogre Axes or Great Threshers) fantastic bases for mercenary runewords like Infinity or Insight. Your merc can use them indefinitely, making them incredibly powerful.

So, while finding an Ethereal item can sometimes feel like a curse, it often presents a unique opportunity. Keep an eye out for those Ethereal treasures, especially if they have special properties or if you have a mercenary ready to put them to good use!
