Learn how to earn experience points in Diablo II: Resurrected. Understand the EXP mechanics, death penalties, and how character level affects gains.

Leveling up in Diablo 2: Resurrected involves earning experience points (EXP) through killing monsters. While straightforward in Normal difficulty, Nightmare and Hell difficulties introduce a death penalty. Dying in Nightmare reduces your EXP by 5%, and in Hell by 10% of what's needed to level up. Repeated deaths can lower your EXP significantly but will never cause you to lose a level.

When you die, you leave behind a corpse containing your gear. Recovering this corpse is crucial but can be challenging, especially if the enemy that killed you is still present. If you successfully recover your corpse, you can regain 75% of the EXP lost due to the death penalty. If corpse recovery is impossible, you can save and exit, then start a new game. Your corpse will appear near town, but this action forfeits the chance to reclaim lost EXP.

The EXP you earn is also influenced by the level difference between your character and the enemy. Killing monsters within five levels of your character yields 100% EXP. As this level gap increases, the EXP earned decreases. For instance, an 8-level difference might result in only 40% EXP, and a 10-level difference can reduce EXP gain to as low as 5%. This effect is more pronounced for characters under Level 25.

Monster levels are generally correlated with Area Levels (aLv), which in turn affect the Item Level (iLv) of dropped loot. While this is more relevant to farming, it's important to note that if monsters are not providing sufficient EXP, it may be time to move to a different area. Killing high-level monsters, such as those found in the Chaos Sanctuary, is the most effective way to gain EXP due to the EXP gain mechanics based on character versus monster level.
