Valkyria Chronicles 4 Off the Rails Skirmish 4 Hard: Learn how to clear this mission in 3 or 4 turns, including supply cache strategies and train mechanics.
Walkthrough
- 1Turn 1 (3 Turn Clear): Tanks clear nearby enemies. Scout leader, Jascha, and Keigel move East to eliminate most enemies in the area. Use the East guard tower for spotting and hitting rag crates. Kai provides sniping support.
- 2Turn 2 (3 Turn Clear): Scout leader's team advances Southeast. Ronald, Christel, Kai, and Claude eliminate infantry moving down the West Hill. Ronald and Christel proceed up the West Hill to activate the middle train and clear the high ground. Depending on remaining enemies, Christel can advance or take cover (press the cover button to crouch behind walls or objects) behind the fence. Riley destroys the middle train using 3 command points. Claude repositions South.
- 3Turn 3 (3 Turn Clear): Prioritize hitting train switches unless confident in a 3-turn clear. Scout leader's team pushes to the Northeast camp; the scout leader can use direct command to reach the far North corner if a supply cache is located there. Christel descends the ladder to activate the North train switch and potentially reach a supply cache. A third scout/engineer heads to the Southwest supply cache. Distract the crouched shock near the train switch by attacking from behind the fence to allow a unit to sneak past for the switch or cache.
- 4Turn 1 (4 Turn Clear): Tanks clear initial nearby enemies. Scout leader, Jascha, and Keigel head East to kill most enemies in the area. The East guard tower is used to spot enemies and hit rag crates. Kai provides sniping support.
- 5Turn 2 (4 Turn Clear): Scout leader's team continues to the Southeast base, while Ronald, Christel, Kai, and Claude clear any infantry that ran down the West hill. Ronald and Christel continue up the West Hill to trigger the middle train and clear out the West high ground. Depending on if there are any remaining enemies that will move up the west ladder on et2, Christel can either advance closer to the ladder, or hide behind the fence to avoid being shot at. Riley destroys the middle train in 3 command points. Claude repositions himself to start heading south.
- 6Turn 3 (4 Turn Clear): Deploy an engineer instead of a third scout. Delay triggering the South train car until Turn 4. Delay killing the Southwest engineer until Turn 3 or 4. Make hitting the North train switch a higher priority than reaching supply caches. Additional units can be deployed from any camp to ease the mission.
- 7Turn 4 (4 Turn Clear): You should have sufficient command points to finish the mission. Consider using the APC instead of the Glory to transport Raz to the West high ground to assist Christel.
Tips
- To ensure supply caches are randomized, restart the game and load from book mode.
- Kill all engineers to reveal supply cache locations beforehand.
- The train cars have extended vision, even in night mode, which can disrupt surprise attacks. Use grass or solid cover behind train cars to mitigate this. Standing near streetlamps does not seem to spoil surprise attacks.
- On Turn 1, train trigger locations are closer than on Turn 2 onward. Avoid the South steps or far up the West Hill to prevent trains from arriving early.
- The AI randomly selects units to act from a list. It may not have enough command points to activate every available unit.
- The 2 scouts and 2 shocks to the West, and incoming enemies from the North down the East Hill, can vary. Always kill the scout on the West Hill on Turn 1, along with the scout and shock East by the guard tower.
- To mitigate West Hill randomness, break both sandbags at the bottom and use the Glory for defensive fire. Breaking sandbags encourages AI to charge rather than entrench.
- Riley, equipped with the Elias MA10 antiarmor mortar and a +15 accuracy accessory, can reliably destroy the middle train car in 3 command points. Get as close as possible for higher accuracy.
- Train turrets on hard skirmish have increased armor, health, and interception fire range. Use a smoke round to neutralize the South train and safely reach the switch and/or caches. Riley can fire from behind the fence, but there's still a risk of damage.
- Prioritize hitting train switches unless confident in a 3-turn clear.
- The crouched shock near the train switch can be distracted by attacking from behind the fence.
