When Robotnik appears from the right, he drops a ball. Jump to dodge it as it bounces towards you.

When Robotnik positions his machine over the ball, he creates an energy suction. Run in the opposite direction to avoid being pulled and hurt.

When Robotnik is in the air, your jumps will be too low to hit him.

As Robotnik proceeds to pick up the ball, you'll have a chance to attack. Hit him once and wait for him to repeat his attack pattern.

Alternatively, you can use Sonic's Insta-Shield (a temporary protective barrier) to hit Robotnik repeatedly without getting hurt, when he isn't creating an energy suction.

If you're Tails, you can fly up to hit Robotnik, but the ball and energy suction will still hurt you.
