Learn how to collect Chaos and Super Emeralds in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. Discover Special Stage mechanics, ring bonuses, and emerald transformations.

The Special Stages in Sonic 3 & Knuckles are where you collect Chaos and Super Emeralds. There are 14 Emeralds in total, requiring you to complete 14 Special Stages. Chaos Emeralds are found in the Sonic 3 Special Stages, while Super Emeralds are collected in the Sonic & Knuckles Special Stages. Giant Rings, found in each Act of every Two-Act Zone (except Death Egg Zone), transport you to a Special Stage. These Giant Rings disappear after one use unless you replay zones via save file zone select.

Your objective in a Special Stage is to collect all the blue spheres to win a Chaos/Super Emerald. Collecting 50 Rings earns a Continue, and collecting all Rings grants a Perfect (an extra life). Perfects are not required for Emeralds but offer an additional challenge. Be aware that the music speeds up and your character moves faster over time, making control more difficult.

Special spheres have unique effects: yellow spheres catapult you 5 spheres ahead, and star spheres send you backward. Red spheres cause you to exit the Special Stage and should be avoided. Blue spheres turn into red spheres when passed through in reverse, so do not go backward through them. You can jump over rows of red spheres, but it's best to attempt only one row at a time. To make Rings appear, find square formations of blue spheres and collect the spheres along the outer edge; all blue spheres in the square will turn into Rings.

If you fail a Special Stage, the sequence of stages you play will cycle. After Special Stage 7, the sequence repeats. Collecting all 7 Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 3 Special Stages before Mushroom Hill Zone allows access to the Emerald Chamber of Hidden Palace Zone via the zone's first Giant Ring. Here, Chaos Emeralds transform into grey Super Emeralds, making other Giant Rings in Sonic & Knuckles levels shiny. Stepping on grey Super Emeralds leads to new Sonic & Knuckles Special Stages for acquiring Super Emeralds.

If you haven't collected all 7 Chaos Emeralds before Mushroom Hill Zone but have some, the zone's first Giant Ring (always shiny) leads to the Emerald Chamber. Here, Chaos Emeralds transform into grey Super Emeralds, offering a chance to acquire one Super Emerald. Access to the Emerald Chamber is limited until game completion unless you use the save file's Level Select to replay Mushroom Hill Zone. Collecting remaining Chaos Emeralds and transforming them is necessary for all 7 Super Emeralds.

Upon completing Sonic & Knuckles Special Stages, grey Super Emeralds transform into colored Emeralds: Red, Blue, Orange, Green, Purple, White, and Cyan, from left to right. Collecting all 7 Super Emeralds results in the second transformations of Sonic and Knuckles, and Tails' only transformation. Giant Rings will now yield 50 Rings. The colors of Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 3 correspond to their Super Emerald counterparts in Sonic & Knuckles; the yellow Chaos Emerald is an exception.
