This guide covers the game Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a 2D platformer developed by the Sega Technical Institute and published by Sega for the Sega Mega Drive in early 1994. It is the direct sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

The game is set on the floating island of Angel Island, which is protected by the Master Emerald. The story begins after the Death Egg crashes onto the island. Dr. Eggman, having survived his previous defeat, manipulates Knuckles the Echidna into believing Sonic is after the Chaos Emeralds while he repairs his ship. Sonic and Tails must traverse Angel Island to stop Eggman from rebuilding the Death Egg.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 introduced Knuckles the Echidna as Sonic's rival. The game's development was challenging, including an initial attempt at a 3D game that caused delays. Unlike its predecessor, Sonic 3 was primarily developed by Japanese members of the STI. A deadline for a McDonald's promotion led to the game being split into two parts: Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles. These can be combined using lock-on technology into Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. Michael Jackson contributed to the soundtrack but went uncredited.
