Struggling with the Chained Ogre in Sekiro? This guide breaks down the boss fight, offering strategies and tips to help you overcome this tough early-game enemy.

The Chained Ogre is one of those early-game bosses that can really throw you for a loop if you're not prepared. It's fast, hits hard, and has some nasty grabs. But don't worry, we'll get you through this!

Stats / Weaknesses:

  • Health: Moderate
  • Posture: Moderate
  • Weaknesses: Fire, Stun (Firecrackers)
  • Resistances: None significant

Phases:

  1. Phase 1: The Ogre is chained and will perform lunging attacks, sweeps, and grabs. Its main threat here is its grab, which can deal massive damage.
  2. Phase 2: After breaking its posture once, the chain breaks, and the Ogre becomes more aggressive. It gains a new grab attack and its lunges become faster.

Strategy:

  • Keep Your Distance: The Ogre's most dangerous attacks are up close. Try to maintain a medium distance so you have time to react to its lunges.
  • Dodge, Don't Block: Most of its attacks are best avoided by dodging. Dodge *towards* its attacks to get behind it for a few hits. Be careful of its grab, which has a wide hitbox.
  • Use Firecrackers: The Shinobi Firecracker prosthetic is incredibly effective here. Use it when the Ogre is about to attack or when it's recovering from a big move. This will stun it, giving you a window to land several hits.
  • Punish the Grab: When it winds up for its grab attack (it will crouch slightly and reach out), dodge to the side or backward. If you dodge successfully, you'll have a brief opening to attack.
  • Be Patient: Don't get greedy. Land a few hits after stunning it or dodging an attack, then back off. Trying to get too many hits in will likely get you punished.
  • Prosthetic Tools: Besides Firecrackers, the Loaded Axe can also deal good posture damage if you can land it after a stun or dodge.
  • Combat Arts: If you have Whirlwind Slash, it can be useful for hitting the Ogre a couple of times safely after a dodge.
Tips
  • The Ogre is particularly vulnerable to fire. If you have the Flame Vent prosthetic, you can use it to deal damage over time and potentially stagger it.
  • Focus on breaking its posture rather than depleting its health. This will make the fight significantly easier.
  • Don't be afraid to use healing items, but do so when you have a clear opening, usually after dodging a big attack.
  • 1x Prayer Bead
  • 1x Memory: Chained Ogre (for a new Combat Art)
  • Experience Points
