Understand the Notoriety system and how money works in Hitman: Blood Money, including how to lower your rating and earn up to $150,000.

Notoriety

Notoriety is a new feature in Hitman: Blood Money that increases the difficulty of future missions based on how many people witness your actions. As your fame grows, guards become more suspicious, your cover (press the cover button to crouch behind walls or objects) is more easily blown, and civilians may flee or report you. If your Notoriety Rating reaches 100, guards will shoot you on sight unless you are disguised. This makes anonymity crucial for success.

There are two main stats that contribute to Notoriety: Witnesses and Caught On Camera.

  • Witnesses: People who saw you commit a crime and you did not eliminate them.
  • Caught On Camera: Being seen on CCTV cameras. To remove this evidence, you must find the Surveillance Machine (VCR) and remove the CCTV Tape.

Your Notoriety Rating is established during your first playthrough of a mission and ranges from 0 (lowest) to 100 (maximum). This rating affects subsequent missions, not the one you just completed. Once established, you cannot raise the Notoriety for a mission; you can only lower it. To increase your overall Notoriety, you must play the next mission. Replaying a mission to achieve a Silent Assassin rating will reset its Notoriety to 0. Alternatively, you can pay money at the end of a mission to reduce your Notoriety.

Money

Money is more important in Hitman: Blood Money than in previous titles. You can use it to purchase weapon and equipment upgrades, as well as to reduce your Notoriety. You earn money by completing main objectives, and can earn more by collecting specific items within missions. Achieving better ratings, such as Silent Assassin, can yield up to $150,000.

Starting a New Game and Mission Difficulty

When starting a new game, you can select a mission and a difficulty: Rookie, Normal, Expert, and Professional (Pro). Difficulty affects AI, damage, guard sensitivity, map visibility, and the number of in-mission saves (checkpoints) you can make.

  • Rookie: Easy AI, low damage, many Points of Interest on the minimap (radar (your minimap with nearby blips and threats marked)), unlimited saves. Notoriety is not active.
  • Normal: Fairly easy AI, slightly more damage, lots of Points of Interest on the minimap, seven saves. Notoriety is active.
  • Expert: Harder AI, more alert guards, more damage. Threat Meter can increase if you linger near guards, potentially creating Witnesses. No Points of Interest or guards shown on the minimap (civilians are visible). Notoriety is active and more negatively impacted by found bodies. Three saves allowed.
  • Professional: Hardest AI, highest damage. No saves allowed. Only Targets and VIPs appear on the minimap. You cannot let anyone witness an Accident.
