A complete walkthrough for Mount Gulug in Final Fantasy IX, detailing enemy strategies, item locations, and Blue Magic acquisition.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
From your current location on the Lost Continent, find the Chocobo tracks to the north. Wander these tracks until you encounter the Feather Circle Friendly Monster. Give it a Moonstone to receive a Lapis Lazuli and 30 AP.
  2. 2
Use Choco to return to Gizamaluke's Grotto. Visit Moguta, the moogle, and give him a Kupo Nut to receive the Extension add-on (Disc 3 Kupo Nut side quest item). Heal and save your game.
  3. 3
Proceed to Popos Heights and stay in the forested areas, fighting until you find the Garuda Friendly Monster. Give it a Lapis Lazuli to receive a Diamond and 40 AP.
  4. 4
If you haven't completed all Chocographs from 'Side Questing 2', do so now. Otherwise, follow the coastline west to Esto Gaza.
  5. 5
In Esto Gaza, approach the central building for a scene indicating your next destination: Mount Gulug. Visit the shops to the right of the bishop. Purchase two Zorlin Shapes and one Gladius for synthesis. Consider buying the Octagon Rod for Vivi to learn Firaga, Blizzaga, and Thundaga. Behind the shop counter on the right, find a Wing Edge.
  6. 6
Return to the previous screen and head north to find the moogle Mogrika. Interact with Mognet twice to read a letter from Artemicion and receive a letter for Moolan.
  7. 7
Take the path to the right to reach Mount Gulug.
  8. 8
Inside Mount Gulug, enter the building on the left. In the bottom right corner, find 9693 Gil. In the middle of the room, search the junk for an Ether. Exit to the left.
  9. 9
Descend the long ladder and search the upper right corner for a Red Hat. Retrace your steps back to the entrance.
  10. 10
Enter the building on the right. Continue right and out the door. Run past the well to the right-most edge and hop up to the ledge above. Continue to the dead end to find a chest containing a Golden Hairpin.
  11. 11
Double back to the well and slide down the rope. At the bottom, find the moogle Moolan. Give him the letter from Mogrika and pick up his letter for Mogtaka.
  12. 12
Two new Blue Magic spells can be learned in Mount Gulug. The first is from a Wraith with a blue candle (approx. 4,686 HP), which teaches Quina the Frost spell. The second is from a Red Dragon, which teaches Twister. Heal and save your game.
  13. 13
Search the bottom right corner for a Wing Edge. Exit to the right and continue to a dead end to find a Gaia Gear.
  14. 14
On the way back from this area, you will be ambushed by two Red Dragons (approx. 8,000 HP each). Use Quina's Eat ability on one to learn the Blue Magic spell Twister.
  15. 15
Backtrack to the well and head left, entering the building at the end. Open the chest for a Demon's Mail.
  16. 16
Go back outside and head north, via the path next to the previous building. Inside, find the moogle Mogtaka. Hand over the letter from Moolan. You can also check his basic wares.
  17. 17
Climb the stairs next to Mogtaka and enter the next building.
