Beyond the main quest, the Great Sea is brimming with optional activities, minigames, and challenges that offer valuable rewards, from Pieces of Heart to Rupees and even Treasure Charts. Mastering these diversions can significantly strengthen Link and enrich your adventure.

Barrel-Dodging Challenge (Windfall Island)

Located on Windfall Island, this nautical challenge tests your sailing prowess and reflexes. Speak to the man near the docks to begin.

• Location: Windfall Island, near the main docks.
• Objective: Sail your boat through a course, dodging barrels and other obstacles within a time limit.
• Strategy:
  1. Initial Attempts: Focus on learning the course layout and the timing of the barrels. Don't worry too much about speed at first.
  2. Wind Manipulation: Use the Wind Waker to adjust the wind direction strategically. A tailwind can provide a crucial speed boost, while a crosswind can help you navigate tight turns.
  3. Sharp Turns: Practice making sharp turns by holding the control stick in the desired direction and quickly changing the wind.
  4. Rewards:
     • First Victory: A Piece of Heart.
     • Subsequent Victories: Rupees, varying in amount based on your time. Aim for faster times to earn more.

Battleship Game (Windfall Island)

A classic game of strategy with a nautical twist, found in the building next to the auction house on Windfall Island.

• Location: Windfall Island, inside the building next to the Auction House.
• Objective: Sink all of your opponent's ships before they sink yours.
• Gameplay: You and your opponent take turns calling out coordinates on a grid. If you hit a ship, you get another turn.
• Strategy:
  1. Start with Corners: Begin by targeting the corners and edges of the grid. Ships often hide along these areas.
  2. Diagonal Spacing: After hitting a ship, try targeting squares diagonally adjacent to it. This can help you locate the rest of the ship quickly.
  3. Pattern Recognition: Pay attention to your opponent's hits. If they hit a square, they might be trying to complete a ship.
  4. Rewards:
     • First Victory: A Piece of Heart.
     • Subsequent Victories: Rupees.

Mail Sorting (Dragon Roost Island)

Help the Rito postal service on Dragon Roost Island by sorting their mail. This minigame requires quick reflexes and good hand-eye coordination.

• Location: Dragon Roost Island, inside the Rito Post Office (the large building with the mail slots).
• Objective: Sort incoming letters into the correct mail slots within a time limit.
• Strategy:
  1. Memorize Destinations: Before starting, take a moment to look at the mail slots and their corresponding destinations. Knowing which slot is for which island is crucial.
  2. Prioritize: Focus on the letters that appear first and work your way across. Don't get distracted by letters further down the conveyor belt.
  3. Rhythm: Develop a rhythm for grabbing and throwing letters. The faster and more accurate you are, the higher your score.
  4. Rewards:
     • Achieving a High Score: A Piece of Heart.
     • Subsequent High Scores: Rupees.

Submarine Challenges (Various Locations)

Throughout the Great Sea, you'll encounter various submarines. These often contain enemies and sometimes offer unique challenges or rewards.

• Location: Scattered across the Great Sea. Look for the distinctive periscope sticking out of the water.
• Objective: Enter the submarine and defeat all the enemies inside.
• Strategy:
  1. Prepare for Combat: Ensure your sword is sharp and you have a good supply of arrows or bombs, as some submarines contain tougher enemies like Darknuts or Moblins.
  2. use Items: The Hookshot can be useful for stunning enemies or reaching higher platforms. Bombs can clear groups of weaker foes.
  3. Explore Thoroughly: After defeating all enemies, always check for hidden chests or switches that might reveal a reward.
  4. Rewards:
     • Defeating all enemies: Often a Treasure Chart, a Piece of Heart, or a significant amount of Rupees.

Salvage Arm Challenges (Various Locations)

The Salvage Arm, acquired from the Fishman, allows you to dredge up sunken treasure from the seabed. Certain squares on your Sea Chart indicate prime spots for valuable finds.

• Location: Any square on the Great Sea where a Treasure Chart indicates sunken treasure.
• Objective: Use the Salvage Arm to retrieve a sunken treasure chest.
• Strategy:
  1. Consult Treasure Charts: Each Treasure Chart will pinpoint a specific location on your Sea Chart where treasure is buried. Mark these locations.
  2. Precise Positioning: Sail your boat directly over the marked spot. The closer you are to the center of the square, the easier it will be to grab the chest.
  3. Careful Maneuvering: Once the Salvage Arm is deployed, guide it carefully to the treasure chest. Avoid hitting obstacles or the seafloor, as this will retract the arm and cost you Rupees.
  4. Rewards:
     • Retrieving Treasure: Rupees, Pieces of Heart, or other valuable items like Magic Jars or Quiver upgrades.
