While The Wind Waker isn't a traditional RPG with complex stat sheets, Link's capabilities can be significantly enhanced through various upgrades and items. Understanding these "stats" and their effects is crucial for overcoming the game's challenges, from fierce boss battles to navigating treacherous seas.

Health (Hearts)

Link's primary measure of survivability is his health, represented by heart containers. You begin your adventure with a mere three hearts, making early encounters quite perilous. Increasing your maximum health is paramount for enduring longer dungeons and tougher enemies.

• Full Heart Containers: These instantly add a full heart to your health bar. They are typically found after defeating dungeon bosses.
• Heart Pieces: Collect four Heart Pieces to form one full Heart Container. There are a total of 44 Heart Pieces scattered across the Great Sea, meaning you can gain an additional 11 full hearts beyond those from bosses. This brings Link's maximum health to a formidable 20 hearts.

Key Heart Piece Locations & Strategies:

• Outset Island:
  • Piece 1: After receiving the Hero's Sword, practice your sword techniques on the three Moblins in Orca's house. Defeat them all to earn a Heart Piece.
  • Piece 2: In the forest area, use the Deku Leaf to glide across to the highest platform where a chest containing a Heart Piece awaits.
• Dragon Roost Island:
  • Piece 1: After completing the Dragon Roost Cavern, speak to the Rito postman on the second floor of the Rito Aerie. He'll give it to you for delivering a letter.
  • Piece 2: Use the grappling hook on the small island east of Dragon Roost Island to swing to a hidden ledge with a chest.
• Windfall Island:
  • Piece 1: Win the auction at the Auction House for the Heart Piece. This can be costly, so save up your rupees!
  • Piece 2: Complete the "Photo Hunt" quest for the artist, Lenzo, by taking specific photos he requests.
  • Piece 3: Help the rich man, Zunari, by finding his missing girlfriend, Maggie.
• Greatfish Isle: After the island is destroyed, a Heart Piece can be found floating in the debris. Use your Grappling Hook to retrieve it.
• Submarines: Many submarines hidden across the Great Sea contain enemies that, once defeated, reward you with a Heart Piece. Always check your Sea Chart for these suspicious red dots!

Magic Power (Magic Meter)

Your magic meter governs the use of several essential items, such as the Deku Leaf, Boomerang, and Skull Hammer. A larger magic meter allows for more sustained use of these powerful tools.

• Magic Meter Upgrade 1: Located in the Fairy Fountain on Mother & Child Isles (D2). You'll need the Ballad of Gales to warp here. Inside, a Great Fairy will double your magic meter.
• Magic Meter Upgrade 2: Found in the Fairy Fountain on Two-Eye Reef (G2). Similar to the first, a Great Fairy will further extend your magic capacity.

Attack Power (Sword Upgrades)

While Link's initial Hero's Sword is serviceable, enhancing its power will make quick work of even the toughest foes.

• Master Sword: This legendary blade is acquired during the main quest. It is significantly more powerful than the Hero's Sword.
• Master Sword Upgrade 1: After restoring the first Sage, the Master Sword's power will be partially restored.
• Master Sword Upgrade 2: After restoring the second Sage, the Master Sword will reach its full, immense power, capable of slicing through enemies with ease.

Defense (Damage Reduction)

There is only one way to directly reduce the damage Link takes from enemies, and it's a significant one.

• Hero's Charm: This rare item, obtained by giving all 20 Joy Pendants to Mrs. Marie on Windfall Island, allows you to see enemy health bars. More importantly, it halves all damage Link takes, making him incredibly resilient. Prioritize collecting Joy Pendants from Bokoblins and other enemies to acquire this invaluable charm.

Wallet Capacity

Rupees are essential for purchasing items, bombs, and participating in auctions. Increasing your wallet size allows you to hoard more wealth.

• Small Wallet (200 Rupees): Your starting wallet.
• Medium Wallet (1,000 Rupees): Obtain this by giving 10 Joy Pendants to Mrs. Marie on Windfall Island.
• Large Wallet (5,000 Rupees): Acquire this by giving 20 Joy Pendants to Mrs. Marie on Windfall Island. This is the maximum capacity.

Bomb Bag Capacity

Bombs are crucial for combat and environmental puzzles. More bombs mean more explosive solutions.

• Small Bomb Bag (30 Bombs): Your initial capacity.
• Medium Bomb Bag (60 Bombs): Found in a chest on the fourth floor of the Pirate Ship (Ghost Ship). You'll need the Hookshot to reach it.
• Large Bomb Bag (99 Bombs): Win this as a prize in the Nintendo Gallery's "Picto Box" minigame on Windfall Island.

Arrow Quiver Capacity

Arrows are vital for ranged combat and activating distant switches.

• Small Quiver (30 Arrows): Your starting capacity.
• Medium Quiver (60 Arrows): Found in a chest on the second floor of the Savage Labyrinth on Outset Island. You'll need to defeat several waves of enemies.
• Large Quiver (99 Arrows): Win this as a prize in the Nintendo Gallery's "Picto Box" minigame on Windfall Island.

Other Beneficial Effects

• Swift Sail (HD Remake Only): While not a stat, this item significantly increases your boat's speed, making sea travel much faster and less tedious. It's a reward from the Auction House on Windfall Island.
• Bottles: Although not a stat, having multiple bottles allows you to carry various potions, fairies, or even soup, providing on-demand health, magic, or temporary buffs. There are four bottles to find:
  1. Bottle 1: Found in the cave on Outset Island where you first meet Tetra.
  2. Bottle 2: Win it from the Auction House on Windfall Island.
