Complete walkthrough for the Swordsmiths Reunited quest in The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, including obtaining the Tempered Sword, Piece of Heart #20, Bottle #4, and Cane of Byrna.
Walkthrough
- 1Smithery Upgrade: From the gargoyle statue in the Village of Outcasts, go west to find a frog-like man trapped by skulls. Use the Titan's Mitt to lift the skulls and talk to him. He will follow you. Use the Magic Mirror to warp to the Light World. The man becomes a swordsmith. Take him to the Smithery in Kakariko Village (east of the village, up a short path). After they reunite, leave and re-enter the Smithery. For 10 Rupees, they will upgrade your Master Sword to the Tempered Sword, making enemies take one less hit to defeat.
- 2Piece of Heart #20 & Locked Chest: Return to the Dark World and go to where the Smithery is in the Light World. Lift dark stones to reach the area, known as the Stake Garden. Use the Magic Hammer to pound all 22 stakes, revealing a secret passage. Enter to find Piece of Heart #20. Outside, near the remains of the Smithery (gossip shop in Dark World), find a purple locked chest. Take it with you.
- 3Bottle #4: Go to the Light World and find the middle-aged man in the canyon leading to the Desert of Mystery. Agree to keep his secret, and he will open the locked chest, revealing Bottle #4. You can use this to buy potions.
- 4Cane of Byrna: In the Light World, use the Flute to fly to Death Mountain. Go to the first Magical Warp Tile near Spectacle Rock and use it to enter the Dark World. Drop down a gap to a ledge and enter the cave. Inside the Treasure Cave, use the Magic Hammer to pound the three Moles. Activate the Magic Cape and walk across the spikes. Lift the large block at the end with the Titan's Mitt. In front of you is a chest containing the Cane of Byrna. This cane creates a protective barrier that damages enemies and consumes less magic than the Magic Cape.
- 5Healing and Magic Refill: After obtaining the Cane of Byrna, heal from the eight skulls in the cave. To refill your magic, return to the Light World, fly to Kakariko Village, take the eastern of the two northwestern exits, lift a dark stone, and hammer posts. Dash into the tree to get a Magic Decanter that refills your Magic Meter.
- 6Ice Palace Entrance: In the Light World, go to Lake Hylia and swim to the island with the Pond of Happiness. Lift the small dark stone to reveal a Magical Warp Tile. Step on it to go to the Dark World's Ice Lake. Defeat the Pikit and enter the cave to begin the Ice Palace dungeon.
Tips
- Have at least one Potion (Red, Green, or Blue) before entering the Treasure Cave, as you will take damage on the return trip across the spikes.
- Do not use the Pegasus Boots on the spiked path in the Treasure Cave; the Magic Cape is more efficient.
- The Tempered Sword reduces the number of hits needed to defeat enemies, but the sword beam damage remains the same.
