Discover the different ways to play Quake, including Single Player, Multiplayer Deathmatch, and Cooperative modes. Learn about their unique features and objectives.
Quake offers several distinct game modes, each providing a unique experience for players. Whether you prefer a solo adventure, competitive multiplayer, or cooperative play, there's a mode for you.
Single Player
This is the core story-driven experience where you navigate levels alone, facing off against Quake's diverse enemies. It's the only mode that allows saving and loading games, and the only one where console cheats can be used without modifying game files.
Multiplayer
In Multiplayer, players can host or join servers for various game types, primarily Deathmatch. Dedicated Deathmatch maps exist, but players can also engage in a multiplayer version of single-player levels. In these maps, AI enemies are absent, but weapons and ammo are more plentiful. Puzzles are often pre-solved, rendering keys unnecessary. Exit points are marked with rings to prevent accidental entry. The primary goal is to 'frag' (kill) other players for points. Self-inflicted deaths or deaths by level hazards result in a point deduction.
Cooperative (Co-op)
Co-op mode is essentially the multiplayer version of the single-player campaign. When a player dies, they respawn rather than having to reload, but this costs them a point from their score. This mode allows multiple players to team up, assisting each other against the game's enemies.
