Guide to defeating Gym Leader Clair in Pokémon Crystal's Blackthorn City Gym and obtaining the Rising Badge. Learn about her Dragon-type Pokémon and strategies.
Walkthrough
- 1Blackthorn City: Upon arrival, heal and shop. Visit the Move Deleter in the house southwest of the Pokémon Center to change moves (e.g., replacing Surf with Waterfall on Gyarados). In the house near the Ice Path, you can trade a Dragonair for a Rhydon, though this is generally not recommended.
- 2Blackthorn City Gym Entrance: Head to the Gym in the north-central part of the city.
- 3Gym Puzzle - 1F: Enter the Gym, head northwest to battle a Trainer. Go north to the stairs. On the upper floor, go southeast and battle another Trainer. In the southeast corner, push the eastern boulder south, then maneuver behind the other boulder and push it north into a hole. Continue north, defeat the Trainer. To the east, push the nearest boulder all the way east, then push the other boulder into the hole.
- 4Gym Puzzle - Return to 1F: Go back south towards the first hole and descend the stairs to reach the first floor again.
- 5Gym Battle - 1F: Defeat the nearby Trainer. Cross the Strength boulder and head north to find another Trainer. After defeating them, cross the next boulder.
- 6Gym Leader Clair: Speak to the girl on the platform – this is Gym Leader Clair, the eighth and final Gym Leader of Johto.
Tips
- Recommended Levels: Level 45+
- Clair's Pokémon Party:
- Dragonair Lv. 37 (Dragon) - Moves: Thunder Wave, Surf/Thunderbolt/Ice Beam, Slam, Dragonbreath
- Dragonair Lv. 37 (Dragon) - Moves: Thunder Wave, Surf/Thunderbolt/Ice Beam, Slam, Dragonbreath
- Dragonair Lv. 37 (Dragon) - Moves: Thunder Wave, Surf/Thunderbolt/Ice Beam, Slam, Dragonbreath
- Kingdra Lv. 40 (Water/Dragon) - Moves: Smokescreen, Surf, Hyper Beam, Dragonbreath
- Dragon Pokémon are generally not a major threat in this generation. Dragonbreath is not particularly strong.
- The three Dragonair share similar movesets, with Thunder Wave being the most concerning due to paralysis. Their elemental coverage moves (Surf, Ice Beam, Thunderbolt) are mostly for coverage.
- Steel-type Pokémon are recommended as they resist most of Clair's attacks. Steelix is an exception as it resists Thunder Wave/Thunderbolt but is weak to Surf.
- Ice-type Pokémon are also a good choice as they can hit Dragonair super-effectively with STAB moves.
- Kingdra is stronger and has fewer weaknesses, but can still be managed with the same types.
