Ghost of Tsushima is set on the island of Tsushima, Feudal Japan in the late 13th Century where players can explore a large open world which consists of diverse areas, settlements, shrines, forests, landmarks, landscapes, and many more.

Players will take on the role of Jin Sakai who was raised and trained as a Samurai. In the late 12th century, the Mongols sent out their fleet and troops to invade Tsushima Island, where a battle happened between the samurai of the island against the Mongols. The samurai forces fought in honor but were brutally killed and defeated and Jin is one of the survivors of his clan. There his world shattered and has decided to continue fighting off the Mongols as a lone-wolf. Jin will have to use unconventional methods, learn and master new skills, and use his training to defeat the Mongol Empire and to free Tsushima Island.
