The year is 1274 and the Mongolian Empire has reduced _China_ and _Korea_ to vassal states. After Kublai Khan's emissaries, demanding surrender, are rejected, the Khan turns his attention to the subjugation of the Japanese. The island of_Tsushima_ lies west of the mainland and when the massive Mongolian fleet arrives on the shores of_Tsushima_, it is met by a small force of samurai, who are easily routed by the much larger force. The invaders then begin a brutal campaign of conquest, mobilizing their forces for the invasion of the mainland.

Lord Shimura, the Jito of the island, is steeped in the traditions of the samurai, inflexible in his adherence to its code. Traditional samurai values like loyalty, honor and respect, even for one's enemy, have been answered by an enemy whose behavior lacks any vestige of that code. Jin Sakai is Lord Shimura's nephew, and he was taught to rigidly adhere to that code of honor, but the brutality of the invaders, has Jin questioning the virtue of those traditional values.
