Familiarize yourself with Lyn Mode, as you may return to it. After one complete playthrough (through both Lyn and Eliwood Mode), you can choose which mode to start with, and Lyn Mode is entirely optional. You can skip it if you wish, as it has minimal impact on the story. The only reason you might want to revisit Lyn Mode is for Hector Hard Mode, which is available much later. Following your first complete playthrough, you can view your tactician rankings in Extras > Battle History.
