Get the Moonveil Katana early in elden ring by completing the Gael Tunnel. Requires 12 Str, 18 Dex, 23 Int.

The Moonveil Katana is a katana that scales primarily with Dexterity and Intelligence, and to a lesser degree, Strength. It requires 12 Strength, 18 Dexterity and 23 Intelligence to wield properly. This weapon is a worthwhile investment for high-Intelligence characters who want a melee weapon. Its special ability, Transient Moonlight, has an R1 and R2 attack. Both have a very short “charge up” time where you’ll sheath your blade, after which you can unleash the attack. Both slashes are accompanied by a magical beam, provided you have sufficient FP left. The R1 slash has a short range but hits a wide arc nearby, while the R2 slash has superior range. With recent nerfs to the Sword of Night and Flame, Moonveil might be a go-to weapon for mage/warriors and is certainly one of the better early options.

  • Acquire your mount, Torrent.
Walkthrough
  1. 1
From The First Step Site of Grace, head northwest to the Church of Elleh.
  2. 2
Follow the road northeast to reach the Gatefront Ruins. Rest at the Gatefront Site of Grace to receive the Spectral Steed Whistle from Melina, allowing you to summon Torrent.
  3. 3
Summon Torrent and follow the road southeast. Cross a bridge and at a fork, turn north, following the trail northeast until you reach the Third Church of Marika. You can evade enemies like Kaiden Sellswords and a Troll-drawn carriage convoy by keeping your distance. Ignore Kenneth Haight and Demi-Humans near a collapsed building. Ride past a Troll outside the Third Church of Marika.
  4. 4
Exit the Third Church of Marika and head north, crossing a shallow river. Look for white vortices called “Spiritsprings” to jump exceptionally high with Torrent. Use the first two Spiritsprings to jump up the cliffs, then turn northeast, ignoring a third Spirit Spring, to find the rear entrance to the Gael Tunnels in the cliffs. You can claim the Rear Gael Tunnel Entrance Site of Grace here, but this entrance is for exiting, not entering.
  5. 5
Exit the Gael Tunnel Rear Entrance and return southwest to find the third Spiritspring. Use it to reach the top of the cliffs to the northwest.
  6. 6
Ride northeast, keeping an eye north for Smoldering Church. Keep your distance from this area to avoid the invader Anastasia, Tarnished Eater.
  7. 7
Continue northeast until you find a short wall dividing Limgrave and Caelid. Just beyond is the Rotview Balcony Site of Grace. Claim it if you want a fast travel point.
  8. 8
Return to the Limgrave side of the wall and turn southwest. Jump up onto rocks forming the boundary of the wall, ride south, drop down a ledge to find a graveyard, drop down two more ledges, and turn east to find another entrance to the Gael Tunnel.
  9. 9
From the Gael Tunnel Site of Grace (activate this after entering through the second entrance), head north into a large chamber. Many enemies are present; some can be backstabbed. Your goal is to head down wooden platforms and exit west, where you’ll find another Radahn Guard near a ladder.
  10. 10
Drop down and either avoid or defeat a second Radahn Guard and a nearby Miner. Head into a tunnel to the south and follow it until you reach a chamber with a door to the west and double doors to the north.
  11. 11
Ignore the double doors to the north, as they lead to the area’s boss. Open the door to the Rear Gael Tunnel Entrance Site of Grace (this is the same grace as the one found via the cliffside entrance, but accessible from the other side now), which will make returning to the boss chamber more convenient.
  12. 12
Proceed through the western door to face the Magma Wyrm boss. Defeat the Magma Wyrm to obtain the Moonveil Katana.
Tips
  • Torrent allows you to bypass most enemies outside the Gael Tunnel.
  • Enemies inside the Gael Tunnel are significantly stronger than those in Limgrave.
  • The Rear Gael Tunnel Entrance Site of Grace is useful for returning to the boss chamber.
