Learn how Health and Armor work in Doom, including Stimpacks, Medikits, Green Armor, MegaArmor, Soulsphere, and MegaSphere.
Health Bonus: Adds 2% extra Health to your current health, allowing you to go past 100% health.
Armor Bonus: Adds 2% extra Armor to your current armor. If you have no armor, picking up an Armor Bonus reduces damage by 1/3, like a Green Armor.
Stimpack: Adds 10% health to your current health. You cannot go past 100% health using these.
Medikits: Adds 25% health to your current health. You cannot go past 100% health using these.
Green Armor: Sets your armor to 100%. This will not work if your armor is greater than 100%. Green Armors reduce damage by 1/3.
MegaArmor: Sets your armor to 200%. MegaArmors reduce damage by 1/2.
Soulsphere: Increases your health by 100%. The maximum health you can have is 200%. Use it when you are low on health.
MegaSphere: Sets both your health and armor to 200%. Leave it if you are high on health and return when you are about to exit the level.
How Armor Works:
Armor helps reduce incoming damage. The amount of damage reduction depends on the type of armor you have.
Green Armor Example: With 100% health, 100% armor, and taking 30% damage: Without armor, you'd have 70% health remaining. With Green Armor, you take 20% damage (30 - 10), leaving you with 80% health and 90% armor.
MegaArmor Example: With 100% health, 200% armor, and taking 40% damage: Without armor, you'd have 60% health remaining. With MegaArmor, you take 20% damage (40 - 20), leaving you with 80% health and 180% armor.
Armor Bonuses Explained: Picking up an Armor Bonus adds 1% to your armor up to 200%. They do not change the type of armor in effect. For example, if you have 75% armor from a MegaArmor and pick up 5 Armor Bonuses, your armor becomes 80% while retaining MegaArmor protection.
Low Armor Scenario: If you don't have enough armor to cover (press the cover button to crouch behind walls or objects) the full damage reduction (1/3 or 1/2), the game subtracts your armor down to 0, and the remaining damage is subtracted from your health. For example, with 100% health, 3% armor, and taking 20% damage: You take 17% damage (20 - 3), leaving you with 83% health and 0% armor.
- Use Stimpacks and Medikits when your health is below 100%.
- Save Soulspheres and MegaSpheres for when you are critically low on health.
- MegaSpheres are the best health and armor recovery items, setting both to 200%.
- Armor Bonuses can be collected even if you have high armor, increasing your maximum armor percentage up to 200% and retaining the damage reduction of your current armor type.
- Be aware that if your armor is very low, incoming damage will significantly deplete your health after your armor reaches 0.
