Meta-Chips and Upgrades

Learn the best strategy for spending Meta-Chips in 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, from unlocking armaments to enhancing your Sentinels for maximum advantage.

Meta-Chips are the main currency in 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, and you'll earn them primarily by defeating kaiju during Destruction phases and by completing story segments in Remembrance. There's a third way to get chips that unlocks after you've found all the mystery files, which converts any leftover mystery points into chips. However, this postgame feature was only accessible starting with patch 1.02. To give yourself the best possible advantage right from the start, it's a good idea to push as far as you can in Remembrance before diving into Destruction missions.

You can spend these hard-earned Meta-Chips to unlock new weapons (armaments) and improve various other combat functions. While we'll go into more detail on those other functions in their own dedicated sections, there's a general spending strategy that makes a lot of sense to follow early on.

First off, you'll want to invest in upgrading the meta-system a few times. This will open up new armament and meta-skill options for you. Depending on how much you enjoy grinding, the chip and score bonuses might seem really appealing early on. Just be aware that these bonuses can make the earlier Destruction sections a bit tougher. Personally, I'd really recommend grabbing at least the additional chip bonuses, as they make unlocking everything else much, much easier down the line.

Next, once you've upgraded the meta-system enough to unlock the armaments you're interested in, start spending your chips to unlock them. We'll cover recommended choices in the Pilot section, so keep an eye out for that.

After you've acquired the armaments you want, finish upgrading the meta-system if you haven't already, purchase the recommended meta-skills, and then focus on enhancing your best armaments. If you're aiming for a one-run challenge, putting 2 levels into the Neurolink Sentinel Enhancement might also be a good idea.

Only after you've secured all your desired meta-system bonuses and enhanced your chosen armaments to your satisfaction should you even consider other Sentinel Enhancements. The only one that's likely to be truly relevant within the typical timeframe of a normal playthrough is Generator. A few levels in Generator right at the very end of the game can be helpful, but they're by no means essential.
