Learn about all five Witcher Signs in The Witcher: Aard, Quen, Yrden, Igni, and Axii. Discover their uses, strengths, weaknesses, and upgrade paths to master combat.

Witcher Signs are magical abilities Geralt can use in combat and for utility. Each Sign has unique effects, from offensive blasts to defensive barriers and crowd control. Mastering them is crucial for survival and tactical advantage.

Aard Sign
A telekinetic blast that can dislodge rubble and knock down enemies, enabling coup-de-graces. It's the first sign learned and is effective for crowd control, especially when upgraded to increase its radius and knockdown/disarm properties. While Igni is better for crowd control, Aard's upgrades make it a worthwhile investment.

Quen Sign
Creates a protective barrier that absorbs damage. It's not a permanent defense, as attacking or casting another Sign breaks the barrier. It's useful for buying time to apply buffs or reposition. On default difficulty, its upgrades are often unnecessary, but resistances to Acid and Fire are unique. The charged version damages enemies who attack Geralt and can knock them down.

Yrden Sign
A magical trap scribed on the ground that damages and applies status effects like Pain, Poisoning, and Blinding to enemies who step on it. It also inflicts attack and dodge penalties. Best used by placing it on bottlenecks before combat. Limitations include enemy immunities, a small radius affecting enemies only once, and lower damage compared to Aard or Igni. The charged version is a weaker area-of-effect attack. It takes longer to cast than Aard and Igni but offers a unique tactical advantage for ambushes.

Igni Sign
Shoots a cone or bolt of fire. Initially weak, its damage increases significantly at higher levels, capable of downing enemies quickly and causing incineration for persistent damage. It's useful for weakening strong enemies before engaging with a sword or as a parting shot. At higher levels, it can become the best crowd-clearing attack, capable of defeating strong non-boss monsters. It can also be used to light campfires.

Axii Sign
A status-affecting spell. The base spell, "Hex," can inflict incompatible statuses like turning an enemy into a temporary ally, putting them to sleep, or blinding them. However, Hex only affects one enemy at a time, and targeting a new enemy removes the effect from the previous one. Further investment in Axii has dubious qualities due to the conflicting statuses it can inflict.
