Guide to defeating the final boss, Malladus, in The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. Learn strategies for each phase, including defending Zelda, playing the Spirit Flute duet, and using the Bow of Light.
Walkthrough
- 1After the cutscene where the Light Arrow weakens Malladus and the Demon Train derails, you'll awaken back in Hyrule. Malladus escapes Zelda's body, but Byrne intervenes, giving Zelda a chance to rejoin her body. She succeeds, but can't float anymore. Byrne is tragically killed, and Malladus possesses Cole, transforming into a giant, horned demon. Time for the final battle!
- 2Phase 1: Defend Zelda. Zelda will try to focus her power. Your job is to defend her from Malladus's fireballs using sword slashes. This starts simple but gets harder as Zelda focuses more power. Eventually, Malladus will fire multiple fireballs at once. Get close to Zelda and use a spin attack at the right moment to deflect them all. You have unlimited tries as long as Link is alive. After this, time briefly stops, protecting you both.
- 3Phase 2: The Sacred Duet. This phase is all about summoning the full power of the spirits and Lokomos. You and Zelda must perform a sacred duet on the Spirit Flute. The notes you need to play are: Red, Purple, Yellow, Light Blue, Red. This is tricky, so pay close attention! Once you nail the song, the Lokomos join in, initiating the next phase.
- 4Phase 3: Bow of Light Assault. Malladus's weak spot is now revealed on his back. Zelda takes the Bow of Light and needs you to distract him so she can shoot. You control both Link and Zelda. The top screen shows Zelda's view, and a new button on the bottom screen makes her fire a Light Arrow. Use Link to get behind Malladus and slash his arms and legs to distract him – these attacks don't hurt him, but they keep his attention. While Malladus is facing away, guide Zelda (by tracing a path on the bottom screen) to get a clear shot. When the crosshairs on the top screen turn yellow, fire the Light Arrow.
- 5Phase 4: Horns and Weaknesses. After two more successful Light Arrow shots, Malladus will collapse. Now, you need to drive the Lokomo Sword through him, but first, you must cut off his horns. Slash at one of the horns until it's cut off. After this, Malladus will be more alert and will dodge Light Arrows unless you time them right. You need to distract him until he roars, then immediately shoot a Light Arrow at his back when you have a clear shot. Fire two more Light Arrows after he roars, and he'll collapse again. Cut off the second horn.
- 6Phase 5: The Final Blow. Malladus hasn't changed his pattern much. Keep firing Light Arrows at his back when he roars and you have a clear shot. After just one Light Arrow, he'll collapse again. Now, slash the gem on his head. Finally, you'll need to rub the stylus rapidly on the bottom screen to keep the Lokomo Sword embedded in Malladus's head while Zelda runs over to help. Continue the rapid stylus movement, and the battle will be over! Malladus is defeated.
Tips
- The Spirit Flute duet in Phase 2 is one of the hardest parts of the game; practice makes perfect!
- In Phase 3 and beyond, focus on keeping Link's distractions effective so Zelda can get clear shots with the Bow of Light.
- Don't get discouraged if Malladus dodges your Light Arrows; just keep distracting him until he roars.
