Get Star 1, 'In The Talons Of The Big Bird,' in Super Mario 64's Shifting Sand Land by luring the Big Bird to a pillar. Avoid quicksand and rolling blocks.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
Run right until you find a Pokey (cactus enemy) near a grey stone structure.
  2. 2
Perform a triple jump to land on top of the grey stone structure.
  3. 3
Press up and angle to look around the level. You will see four pillars and a Big Bird carrying the star in its talons. The bird flies around the pillars.
  4. 4
Fall off the grey stone structure.
  5. 5
Advance upwards and find a second Pokey.
  6. 6
Near the second Pokey are stone tiles with giant rolling stone blocks.
  7. 7
Warning: Venture onto these stone tiles, but be careful not to fall into the quicksand, as this results in instant death. Also, avoid getting squashed by the rolling stone blocks.
  8. 8
Navigate through the stone tiles to reach the northwest side of your starting area.
  9. 9
You will arrive at an area with a small patch of water next to a pink Bob-omb.
  10. 10
Approach the nearby pillar. Despite its steepness, you can walk up it.
  11. 11
Walk up the pillar to reach the top.
  12. 12
Stand on top of the pillar and wait for the Big Bird to fly over.
  13. 13
When the bird flies directly over the pillar, jump up and hit the star with your head to knock it from the bird's claws.
  14. 14
Walk down the pillar and grab the star.
Tips
  • You can jump on any of the four pillars to wait for the bird, but using the pillar near the water and pink Bob-omb is easiest.
  • The Big Bird constantly flies around the four pillars.
