Learn about Super Sonic, Super Knuckles, Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles, and Super Tails transformations in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Requires 7 Chaos/Super Emeralds.

Sonic & Knuckles Transformations:

In Sonic & Knuckles, there are two transformations: Super Sonic and Super Knuckles. You must obtain all 7 Chaos Emeralds to transform. Collecting 50 Rings allows you to double jump and activate these Super Forms. You lose Rings every second while transformed, so collect more Rings to maintain the form. Losing a life occurs if you crush yourself, drown, or fall into bottomless pits.

Super Sonic runs faster than regular Sonic and can break through barriers without needing to Spin Dash. Super Knuckles runs and climbs much faster than regular Knuckles. Both transformations can destroy Badniks (enemies) by touching them. These transformations make Mini-Bosses and Bosses easier, and collecting the Chaos Emeralds unlocks better endings. Collecting all 7 Chaos Emeralds also grants access to The Doomsday Zone for Sonic.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles Transformations:

Sonic 3 & Knuckles features five transformations: Super Sonic, Super Knuckles, Hyper Sonic, Hyper Knuckles, and Super Tails. You need all 7 Chaos Emeralds for Super Forms and all 7 Super Emeralds for Hyper Forms, with Super Tails being an exception requiring 7 Super Emeralds. Like in Sonic & Knuckles, collecting 50 Rings enables transformation via a double jump. Maintaining these forms requires collecting Rings, as you lose them over time. Crushing yourself, drowning, or falling into bottomless pits results in losing a life.

Super Sonic runs faster and breaks barriers. Hyper Sonic can breathe underwater, double jump to unleash a lightning attack destroying all Badniks on screen. Super Knuckles runs and climbs faster. Hyper Knuckles can breathe underwater and glide into walls to destroy all Badniks on screen. Super Tails flies faster, stays airborne longer, and his 4 surrounding Flicky birds automatically attack all enemies. All transformations destroy Badniks on contact.

Collecting all 7 Chaos/Super Emeralds makes Mini-Bosses and Bosses easier and unlocks better endings. Collecting all 7 Chaos Emeralds allows transformation into Super Sonic/Knuckles. However, transforming Chaos Emeralds into grey Super Emeralds in the Emerald Chamber of Hidden Palace Zone prevents future Super Form transformations.
