Learn how to collect Chaos Emeralds in Sonic the Hedgehog 2's Special Stages. Master blue spheres, yellow spheres, star spheres, and red spheres to achieve victory.
The gameplay in Special Stages differs depending on whether Sonic & Knuckles or Sonic 3 & Knuckles is being played.
Sonic & Knuckles Special Stages:
Special Stages are where you collect Chaos Emeralds. There are seven Chaos Emeralds in the game, requiring you to complete 7 Special Stages. Giant Rings are located in each Act of every Two-Act Zone (except Death Egg Zone). Jumping through a Giant Ring transports you to a Special Stage. Giant Rings disappear after use.
Your objective is to grab all blue spheres to win a Chaos Emerald. Collecting 50 Rings earns a Continue. Collecting all Rings earns a Perfect (an extra life). Perfects are not required for Chaos Emeralds but offer a challenge for experienced players. Beginners should focus on Emeralds first, as Perfects are difficult initially due to the Special Stage layouts.
After a few minutes, the music speeds up and your character moves faster, increasing control difficulty. Be cautious.
Yellow spheres catapult you 5 spheres forward. Star spheres send you backward; dodge them to avoid bumping into red spheres. Red spheres exit you from the Special Stage, so avoid them at all costs. Blue spheres turn into red spheres when passed through in the opposite direction; do not go back through them. You can jump over rows of red spheres, but it's difficult; try jumping over only one row at a time.
To make Rings appear, find square formations of blue spheres and grab the spheres on the outer edge. These will turn into Rings.
If you fail a Special Stage, you will cycle through them sequentially the next time you enter. After Special Stage 7, the sequence repeats. Once all 7 Chaos Emeralds are collected, Giant Rings will yield 50 Rings instead of transporting you to a Special Stage.
The reward for collecting all 7 Chaos Emeralds is the Super Forms of Sonic and Knuckles.
