Mini-Boss Battle: Shielded Sphere Machine - 8 Hits

This is considered the hardest mini-boss in Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Initially, eight balls circle a central machine on the floor. You can hit the eye of the machine, but each hit causes one ball to explode, scattering tiny spikes. It is difficult to avoid these spikes.

If you lose your Rings (the game's collectible currency), try to retrieve them quickly to maintain constant attacks on the eye.

When the balls extend, wait for them to circle the machine again before attacking the eye.

After all eight balls are destroyed and you have hit the eye 8 times, an explosion occurs, and the eye itself will attack. Now, two spiked platforms circle the eye. You must jump on these platforms to hit the eye.

The eye fires a laser underneath it at varying times; wait for the laser to disappear before attacking. If the eye fires the laser and hovers towards you, the rotating spiked platforms can cause damage. If you move to the opposite side of the screen, you can duck to try and avoid the spikes.

Tips
  • Retrieve lost Rings immediately to sustain attacks.
  • Wait for the balls to complete their rotation before attacking the eye.
  • In the second phase, wait for the laser to disappear before jumping on the platforms to attack the eye.
  • Ducking on the opposite side of the screen can help avoid spikes when the eye moves towards you.
