Chao #1 (Shortcut Way): From the start, go right, jump over spikes and a badnik, and hit the speed booster up the slope. When you see three rings to the left, jump off the slope to land on another speed booster that launches you up a steep slope to the left. At the top of the next hill, slow down and carefully time your jump over a crusher. Bounce off a small pole against the left wall to the right, then hit the speed booster to be launched into a waterfall. At the bottom, carefully jump over a speed booster into a gap to the left of the waterfall's base. Climb up the tunnel, then climb again to the top. To the right is a room blocked by a breakable barrier. To break it without falling back into the hole, have Knuckles push against the barrier (press right) then hit B. Inside is a 1-Up item box and the Chao.

Chao #1 (Long Way): Starting from the waterfall, climb to the top. Jump onto the spikes on the wall below your target, then time your movement under the first crusher. Carefully walk under a second crusher. Wait for the top moving block to be farthest right, then walk off the edge and jump over the second moving block to the right before it crushes you against the left wall. Continue right to a rail and grind. You'll be sent up a wall, through springs, a speed booster, and onto the ceiling. A spring will send you left to a small pole or a moving block. Use the small pole to bounce left. You'll encounter another waterfall; go up it. Go left to a barrier you don't need Knuckles to break. Jump down left, avoiding a spike trap. A moving block goes left and right; when it's far left, jump onto it in the gap formed. Above and to the left is a crusher.
