Your Nioh 3 walkthrough continues! Learn how to defeat Edward Kelley, understand Oda's enhanced attacks, and claim the Tengen Kujaku Guardian Spirit.
Alright, let's wrap up this section of our Nioh 3 journey. We've just dealt with Oda, and while the outcome might not be exactly what you expected, you'll get a cool cut-scene and, if you've been following along with all the sub-missions, a sweet trophy! Congrats on snagging the 'Friend of Guardians' Silver Trophy – that means you've been collecting all the Guardian Spirits, which is awesome!
You'll also obtain the 'Possessed by Tengen Kujaku via spirit division' spirit. Nice!
But we're not done yet! It's time to go after Kelley himself. Head forward and make sure to check out the SHRINE on your right. It's the perfect spot to heal up and restock your items – you'll definitely appreciate it.
Continue on, and get ready for another cut-scene followed by a boss fight.
BOSS ENCOUNTER: EDWARD KELLEY
Compared to some of the bosses we've faced, Kelley isn't too tough, and that's by design. He's definitely capable of taking you down if you're not careful, though. Keep in mind that Kelley loves to warp around the arena. Most of the time, he's trying to warp behind you for his 'Dark Shard Lunge' move. When he warps, roll away from your back to avoid it. Knowing he likes to do this can actually help you predict where he'll pop out and get in some hits.
Kelley also has some 'get away from me' moves if you get too close. These include 'Ouroboros Flame' and 'Ouroboros Wind,' plus a blocking move. He uses that block quite a bit – you'll see his arms come up, and Ouroboros' scales will appear to block your attacks. Pretty neat animation!
Overall, this fight is pretty straightforward. Kelley has a basic melee attack, teleports a lot, and has a few defensive moves. Like most human enemies, you can break his Ki and get in some grapple or finishing attacks. Just keep your health up, and you should be fine.
Pro-Tip: Try to conserve as many health and magic items as you can. We're going to need them very soon. Trust me on this!
BOSS MOVES:
- Dark Shard Combo: This is Kelley's basic melee. He'll swing his dark shard sword up to three times. It's easy to guard against or dash away from.
- Teleport Lunge: Kelley's signature move. He'll warp out of sight (using Ouroboros) and then usually reappear behind you for a lunge with his dark shard. He might also try to grab you, but the lunge is more common.
- Grab: Kelley's grab attack. It hasn't changed much since the first time you fought him. He no longer steals Amrita with it.
Oda's Enhanced Attacks (for reference):
- Earth Enhanced: Oda's sword gets an earth enhancement, doubling your Ki cost when you act. He also creates 'Earth Mines' – purple areas on the ground that deal low earth damage and stack the earth status effect on you.
- Wind Enhanced: His sword gets a wind enhancement, which can lower your attack if he applies the wind status. He also uses 'Wind Slash,' similar to Ishida's move, creating blades of wind in front of him and diagonally. You can't block these, so rolling to the sides is your only safe option.
