Kuroda Kanbei

Kuroda Kanbei, whose real name is Kiyoaki and later adopted the name Yoshitaka, is a general under the Toyotomi clan and father to Kuroda Nagamasa. He served Hideyoshi as a staff officer, providing battlefield assistance. Following the Honnoji Incident, Kanbei orchestrated the "Chugoku Rollback," a massive retreat that solidified his reputation as an unparalleled military strategist. Despite Hideyoshi's wariness of his brilliance, leading to Kanbei's gradual removal from power and exile to Kyushu, Kanbei's ambition to rule the nation remained. His physical health declined due to injuries sustained during a youthful capture and imprisonment, forcing him to walk with a stick. Kanbei is sensitive to social and political changes, knowledgeable about foreign affairs, and showed no hesitation in dealing with William, even suggesting he adopt the name "Anjin" (pilot) due to the difficulty of pronouncing his real name. Kanbei closely observes William, seeing him as a potential catalyst for changing Japanese history. He thrives in the turbulent eras of the Oda and Toyotomi clans, closely monitoring Ishida and Tokugawa, and remains poised to act if an opportunity to conquer Japan arises. His deteriorating health means much of his hope rests with his son, Nagamasa, whom he is proud of, seeing his own role as watching over him.

Tachibana Ginchiyo

Tachibana Ginchiyo is the wife of Tachibana Muneshige. She inherited her father Tachibana Dosetsu's legendary sword "Raikiri" (lightning slicer) and his ferocity, showing no fear of yokai. Ginchiyo and Muneshige share a loyal and firm bond, their combined military prowess feared by many. Ginchiyo fell ill while Muneshige was campaigning, losing the ability to bear children, and senses her life nearing its end. Her primary wish is to join forces with Muneshige to protect their people. While she loves Muneshige, her regret over childlessness causes some distance, and she feels jealousy towards Yachiko, Muneshige's concubine, though she ultimately accepts her as a supporter of Muneshige and the Tachibana clan. Ginchiyo's Guardian Spirit is a female Raiken, the mate to Muneshige's Raiken Guardian Spirit. When Muneshige is away, Ginchiyo is entrusted with the castle, and it is said she and her maids would don armor to defend against enemies, demonstrating Muneshige's trust. She was so beloved by her domain's populace that enemies avoided her residence for fear of incurring the wrath of the local peasantry.

Tachibana Muneshige

Tachibana Muneshige is a general under the Toyotomi clan, known as a superb leader trusted by his advisors and domain residents. Originally from the Takahashi family, loyal to the Otomo clan, he was adopted into the Tachibana clan upon marrying Ginchiyo, daughter of the then-leader Tachibana Dosetsu. Muneshige has since become the head of the clan himself.

Nagamasa and Mitsunari

Nagamasa and Mitsunari had a long-standing rivalry. After Mitsunari's capture and defeat at the Battle of Sekigahara, Nagamasa showed no contempt. When Mitsunari was sentenced to death, Nagamasa is said to have placed his own coat on Mitsunari's shoulders, recognizing his depth of feeling and acceptance of fate. Nagamasa himself was granted a large fiefdom by Tokugawa Ieyasu for his service at the Battle of Sekigahara, fulfilling his father's expectations.
