Gran Turismo 2 features two distinct modes: Arcade and Simulation. In Arcade mode, players have free access to all courses and vehicles. However, to unlock content in Simulation mode, players must earn driver's licenses, purchase cars, and win trophies to gain access to new race tracks.

The game boasts a massive roster of nearly 620 cars and 27 race tracks. Unlike its predecessor, players can now race events individually rather than as part of a tournament. The game also introduced rally racing on winding dirt tracks, including variations of the Pikes Peak course like Hill Climb and Downhill.

Gran Turismo 2 was the first in the series to support DualShock vibration and also offered compatibility with the NeGcon controller, making it accessible with various third-party steering wheel controllers.
