Navigate the challenging Chapter 17 of Final Fantasy VII Remake. This guide covers objectives, boss strategies for the M.O.T.H. Unit, and finding key weapons like Cloud's Twin Stinger.

Walkthrough
  1. 1
    Objective: A Way Out
    • After the opening scenes, find a purple Chest containing the Reinforced Staff for Aerith in the starting room. Learn its Lustrous Shield ability if she hasn't already.
  2. 2
Equip Aerith with the Reinforced Staff and update her armor and Materia. The Reinforced Staff offers high Magic Attack and its ATB Ward ability creates a zone that allows allies to borrow ATB from Aerith.
  3. 3
After the first battle, locate a Bench and vending machine. The Combat Simulator is nearby but not yet available.
  4. 4
    Objective: Find the Others
    • When Cloud is alone in The Drum - Level 1, explore the eastern dead-end branch to find Poison Materia.
  5. 5
Continue until Cloud reaches the entrance to 1st Ward. Rest at the Bench before entering.
  6. 6
Before entering 1st Ward, equip Cloud and Barret with the Lightning-Elemental Materia combo to mitigate the M.O.T.H. unit's lightning attacks.
  7. 7
Consider equipping Steal Materia for the M.O.T.H. Unit battle to obtain the Iron Maiden armor (high Defense, no Materia slots).
  8. 8
The M.O.T.H. Unit initially has rotating blades that prevent melee attacks. Barret's guns can damage it, and Cloud's Punisher Mode Parry is effective against its physical attacks. Once damaged, the blades retract, allowing Cloud to use melee attacks.
  9. 9
After defeating the M.O.T.H. unit, backtrack to the Bench outside 1st Ward to heal for free before the next battle.
  10. 10
Exit the area where you fought the M.O.T.H. unit. Nearby, you will find Cloud's Twin Stinger, the last weapon in the game.

Aerith's Reinforced Staff and the ATB Ward Ability: The Reinforced Staff is second only to the Mythril Rod in Magic Attack. Its ATB Ward ability costs 2 ATB bars and creates a large area for 240 seconds. Allies within the Ward can partially regain ATB by drawing it from Aerith's gauge after using an ATB ability. This transfers ATB from Aerith to allies without a net gain. Learning this ability grants +10% Proficiency, with a bonus for allies using ATB attacks within the Ward.

Cloud's Twin Stinger and the Counterstance Ability: The Twin Stinger offers a balance between Cloud's physical and Magic strength, with upgrades focusing on Magic buffs and MP. It can acquire all 6 Materia slots before Postgame and may learn the Reprieve ability. The Counterstance ability costs 1 ATB and puts Cloud in a defensive stance. If attacked within a short period, Cloud takes 80% less damage and launches a sequence of three AOE counterattacks that increase Stagger and can launch enemies. Unlike Parry, Counterstance counters any attack (melee, ranged, or Magic) and is effective against aggressive enemies that telegraph their attacks.
