Death Howl integrates a gem and socketing system that allows for deep customization of Ro's abilities and equipment, adding another layer of strategic depth to the soulslike deckbuilding experience. While the core of your power lies in your deck, the gems you find and socket into your gear can provide significant, often game-changing, bonuses. These gems are not merely stat sticks; they can fundamentally alter how your cards function or enhance Ro's passive capabilities as you traverse the thirteen realms of the spirit world.

Gems are typically acquired through defeating elite enemies, completing specific challenges, or as rare drops from scavenging certain nodes in the environment. Each piece of armor and potentially certain weapon slots will have a limited number of sockets. The type of gem that can be socketed into a particular slot is often determined by the gear itself, indicated by color-coded or symbol-based socket types. For example, a helmet might have two red sockets and one blue socket, meaning it can accept gems that provide strength-based bonuses (red) and intelligence-based bonuses (blue).

The true power of the gem system lies in synergy. A common strategy involves socketing gems that enhance your primary damage type. If your deck is heavily reliant on fire damage cards, you might seek out Ember Gems that increase fire damage by a specific percentage, say 15%, or reduce the Mana cost of fire spells by 1. Other gems might offer defensive boons, such as increasing your resistance to a particular elemental damage type or providing a chance to reflect a portion of incoming damage. For instance, a Frost Gem could grant a 10% chance to chill enemies on hit, slowing their attack speed, which is invaluable against fast-moving foes like the creatures found in the Realm of Piercing Winds.
