PvP vs PvE

Understand World of Warcraft PvP vs PvE realms. Learn about faction chat, ganking, and when to choose a PvP realm.

In World of Warcraft, realms are divided into Player versus Environment (PvE) and Player versus Player (PvP). On PvE realms, you decide when to engage in combat with players from the opposing faction, which is the standard gameplay experience for new players. On PvP realms, you can be attacked by players of the opposing faction at any time. Due to the presence of many high-level characters (level 80s), expect to be attacked on PvP realms unless players from your faction are actively protecting the area.

You cannot understand chat from the opposing faction. Rogues and druids are considered strong choices for PvP due to their ability to disappear when needed. It is recommended to play on a PvE realm for some time before transitioning to a PvP realm.

Warning: On PvP realms, you are subject to 'ganking,' where higher-level players may repeatedly defeat low-level characters, camp graveyards or bodies, and kill quest givers. Rogues can also use stealth to attack you at any moment. This makes PvP significantly harder than PvE, and playing on a PvE realm first can make your questing experience faster. Playing the less popular faction on a PvP realm further increases the difficulty.

You are safe from PvP encounters within your faction's controlled territories.

Regarding character progression, realms are not connected, meaning you cannot use a character on one realm to support another on a different realm. You also cannot support a character of the opposite faction, even on the same realm, nor can you befriend members of the opposing side.

Death Knights (DKs) can be created on any realm once you have at least one character at level 55 and own the Wrath of the Lich King (WotLK) expansion. You can create level 55 Death Knights on a PvP realm, which offers a slight advantage by allowing you to bypass early-game PvP encounters.
