Spearmen in Total War: Rome II are characterized by their high durability, acting as defensive walls that can withstand frontal assaults. However, their slow movement speed makes them susceptible to flank attacks from cavalry and archers. While they are effective at killing cavalry when engaged head-on, they are in trouble if hit from the flanks by the same units.

The Phalanx formation, while restricting movement, creates an impenetrable wall capable of inflicting heavy damage on enemies that advance directly into it. Spearmen are particularly superb in bottleneck situations where the enemy has no other path but to advance into their spears. Despite their defensive prowess, their slow speed and only decent killing power mean they won't accumulate high kill counts unless the enemy is forced into prolonged engagements with them.
