Skirmishers in Total War: Rome II serve as all-around soldiers primarily used to pepper enemy flanks and distract opposing infantry. They can skirmish away and continue throwing spears, but their throwing range is limited, making them less effective once archers become prevalent. Additionally, skirmishers do not possess a large amount of ammunition.

What gives skirmishers an edge is their capability in hand-to-hand combat. Unlike most archers who have weak armor, skirmishers are typically equipped with a shield and sword, making them capable of close-quarters fighting. When they deplete their ammunition, you can have them charge enemy flanks or engage enemy archers.
