Forest Biome

The Forest biome is your starting point in Terraria, where you'll likely establish your base. It's rich with critters for catching and selling, and you can catch Ladybugs at night for early fishing bait. Common enemies include various slimes, zombies, and wandering eyes, with Blood Moon events spawning additional threats.

Herbs:

• Daybloom: Harvest during daytime.

Notable Items:

• Spear: A great early game weapon with decent reach that hits several times due to its knockback capabilities. Walk towards enemies as you attack them for best results.
• Wooden Boomerang: A ranged weapon you can throw from relative safety, good for hitting flying or dangerous enemies you want to stay away from.
• Wand of Sparking: A magic weapon that uses little mana, deals decent damage, and can set enemies on fire. Also provides a bit of vision when fired.
• Aglet: An accessory that gives a small movement speed boost, mainly used for upgrading boots later.
• A Guide to Plant Fiber Cordage: An accessory that lets you destroy vines to gain vine rope; normally, you won't gain anything from destroying them without this.
• Radar (your minimap with nearby blips and threats marked): An informational accessory that tells you how many enemies are nearby, mostly useless but used to craft a better accessory later.
• Glowsticks: A useful consumable like torches for water, staying lit underwater. Can also be placed at your feet when digging vertical tunnels for constant light.

Underground Layer

The Underground layer is distinct from the surface; you'll know you've entered it when the walls change from dirt to a brown stone-like appearance, and you can no longer place torches on the walls. This layer hosts more varied and dangerous slimes than the surface, along with Cave Bats and worms that can phase through blocks.

Herbs:

• Blinkroot: Found randomly.

Notable Items:

• Magic Mirror: A consumable item with infinite uses that teleports you to your spawn point, acting like Recall Potions but never running out.
• Cloud in a Bottle: An extremely important accessory allowing a double jump, making rope less necessary for exploration and providing maneuverability for bosses and enemies.
• Enchanted Boomerang: An upgraded Wooden Boomerang that produces light.
• Extractinator: A crafting station that lets you use certain blocks to gain various items. It has a 5% chance to appear in chests.

Cavern Layer

The Cavern layer contains many useful items and a variety of enemies including black & mother slime, Skeleton, Cave Bat, Salamander, Crawdad/Giant Shelly, Undead Miner (uncommon), Tim (rare), Nymph (rare), Pinky Slime (rare), and Cochineal Beetle (rare). Water may also contain Blue Jellyfish and Piranhas. Traps like dart, boulder, and explosive traps are also present; dart traps can be mined and used by you.

Notable Items:

• Depth Meter: Drops from Cave Bats, indicating your vertical depth and current layer.
• Mining Shirt & Pants: Drops from Undead Miners (uncommon enemy). Wearing with a Mining Helmet (bought from Merchant) grants a 30% mining speed boost.
• Bone Pickaxe: Drops from Undead Miners, it's the fastest pre-hardmode pickaxe.
• Wizard Hat: Drops from Tim, a head slot magic armor item used with the wizard set.
• Metal Detector: An incredibly useful informational accessory that indicates the highest rarity ore nearby and alerts you to Life Crystals.
• Hook: Dropped from Piranhas and Skeletons. Used with a chain to craft your Grappling Hook, a highly important item for survival against bosses.
