Access to the Underworld Biome.
Optional: Lucky Horseshoe accessory (found in Sky Island Chests) or a method to stop fall damage.
Optional: King Slime mount for faster descent.

Walkthrough

Find a location near your Forest Biome house (or anywhere) to begin digging.

Dig a vertical tunnel straight down to the Underworld Biome. Use the smart cursor (a function to aid building and digging) to speed up the process.

The tunnel only needs to be two tiles wide.

Continue digging all the way to the Underworld.

Work around any lava encountered. It is recommended to drain lava by creating pockets off to the side to ensure the tunnel reaches the Underworld without interruption.

Once you reach the Underworld Biome, take measures to stop fall damage.

You can equip the Lucky Horseshoe accessory, found in Sky Island Chests, to prevent fall damage.

Alternatively, create a pocket of water just above the Underworld Biome to stop fall damage, then jump out. Note that water evaporates in the Underworld Biome.

To speed up your descent, consider using the King Slime mount, which greatly increases falling speed.

Tips

Use the smart cursor function to make digging the vertical tunnel faster.
Drain lava pockets to ensure an uninterrupted path to the Underworld.
Place water just above the Underworld Biome to stop fall damage, as it evaporates within the biome itself.
The King Slime mount significantly speeds up your descent.
