The journal is accessed by holding the [M] key. The compass on the journal always points towards your current objective (a marker on your screen indicating where you need to go). To see a list of your current objectives, press the Right Mouse Button [RMB].
The lighter is activated by tapping the [M] key. It provides a low-level light source and can also be used to burn away cobwebs. Be careful when using the lighter, as it can give away your position.
