Understand the Heads Up Display (HUD) in Left 4 Dead 2, including survivor and infected views, health indicators, and more.
The Heads Up Display (HUD) is visible throughout your escape in Left 4 Dead 2, providing essential information.
Besides your current weapon and crosshairs, the HUD displays the direction of any damage taken via red lines appearing in the middle of the screen, occasional blood splatters, and tutorial notes.

All Survivors begin with 100 Health points. If you run out of Health points, permanent or temporary, you will become Incapacitated and need help to get back on your feet. A Survivor brought back up starts with 30 temporary HP. If Incapacitated a second time, you will die the next time you run out of Health without a Health Kit applied. It is impossible to get back to 100 HP after being hit once. When a Survivor's Health drops below 40 HP, your speed decreases. A Survivor clinging onto 1 HP will be VERY slow.
If a Survivor is killed, they can be brought back usually by being rescued from a Closet (a small room where incapacitated players can be held), or at the end of a round. They will start with 50 HP, a random Tier 1 Weapon, and a Pistol.
Survivors can be seen through walls as blue silhouettes. A Survivor under attack by a Special Infected (being pounced on, puked on by a Boomer, incapacitated, etc.) will have an orange outline or silhouette. This also applies to Survivors trapped in Rescue Closets. Enemies covered in vomit will have a purple outline.
Infected can see how heavily damaged each Survivor is by their outline color (Green, Yellow, or Red). They can also see Survivors' silhouettes and fellow special Infected, even when in spawning mode. Player-controlled Infected have blue auras, while the Witch has a white or red aura depending on her anger levels.
Before engaging, Infected can move freely and quickly all over the map without being seen by Survivors, in a state called spawning mode. They can also teleport to Survivors' positions with E if they get lost. When ready, they can click to spawn.
- Pay close attention to the red lines on your HUD to quickly identify the direction of incoming damage.
- Monitor your teammates' health bars on the bottom-left of your HUD to prioritize healing or assistance.
- As an Infected, use the visual cues of Survivor outlines (Green, Yellow, Red) to gauge their health and plan your attacks.
- Remember that Survivors under attack or in Rescue Closets will have an orange outline, making them easier targets or indicating a need for rescue.
