Dive into Left 4 Dead 2's game modes! Learn Co-op, Versus, Survival, Scavenge, Realism, and weekly Mutations to survive the zombie apocalypse.

Alright, so Left 4 Dead 2 has a bunch of ways to play, but they all boil down to one thing: slaughtering zombies and trying to make it out alive. Let's break 'em down so you know what you're getting into.

Co-op Campaign/Single Player
This is your bread-and-butter. You and up to three other friends (or just you, if you're going solo) are the Survivors. Your goal is to push through a whole Campaign, which is split into levels. Each level ends at a Safe House – that's your checkpoint. Make it through all the levels, complete a final objective, and you'll get rescued. Playing solo is pretty similar, but some things, like grabbing Fuel Cans, can be a bit easier when it's just you.

Versus
This mode is where things get spicy. It's like Campaign, but four players get to control the nasty Special Infected. You've got two teams of four: one team plays as Survivors, the other as Infected. You'll swap roles each round, and the team that scores more points wins. Points are earned by how far you get as Survivors, and you get bonus points for reaching the Safe Room and dealing out damage as Infected. Expect some map changes too!

Survival
Think you're tough? Survival mode is all about seeing how long you and your team can last against endless waves of zombies. It's all about planning and making smart moves (sometimes you might even find a glitch to help you out!). You'll earn medals based on your endurance: Bronze for over 4 minutes, Silver for 7 minutes, and a Gold Medal for a full 10 minutes of pure zombie-slaying survival.

Scavenge
This mode is a race against time. There's an objective on the map that needs to be fueled up. You'll find Fuel Cans scattered around, and your job as Survivors is to grab them and fill the objective before the clock hits zero. Every can you collect adds 20 seconds to the timer. The Infected team's only goal is to stop you. When the round ends – either because time ran out or all Survivors are down – you swap sides. Scores are based on rounds won, cans collected, and how quickly you did it. Games can be up to 10 rounds long, and the losing team of a round gets to be Survivors first next time.

Realism
This mode cranks up the difficulty by making things more… well, realistic. You can't see through walls anymore (no more glowing auras around players or items!), and the regular zombies hit way harder. The only ways to bring back dead teammates are with a Defibrillator or by reaching the next round – no Rescue Closets here! Witches are instant-kill machines, no matter the difficulty. The Special Infected aren't affected by these changes, though.

Mutations
These are like special weekly events that shake up the gameplay. Each week brings a new twist or modifier, keeping things fresh. Sometimes, a popular Mutation might even make a comeback. It's worth checking the official blog to see what's happening each week!
