Learn how to defeat Common and Special Infected in Left 4 Dead 2, including tips for Hunters, Smokers, Boomers, and Tanks.
Walkthrough
- 1Common Infected: Shoot dawdling zombies with a Pistol or chop them with Melee Weapons. Pipe Bombs are effective, especially during Crescendo/Panic Events or when clearing rooms. Fires kill them quickly; Molotovs are useful for choke points. Bile Bombs summon an extra Horde if one isn't present. Use primary Weapons only if they are too numerous for Pistols or Melee. Scoped Rifles always kill Common Infected in a single shot. Don't hesitate to shoot any Infected attacking another Survivor's back. Jumping on a zombie's head kills them. Prioritize killing Uncommon Infected like Fallen Survivors and Clowns first. During the Finale, a Bile Bomb can distract Infected to reach the exit, and a Molotov can be used to burn them.
- 2Hunters: Always stay with another Survivor when you hear or see a Hunter, as they growl before pouncing and scream when they do. A burning Hunter deals more damage when pouncing. Shove a Hunter away when it is in the air to disorient it, and shoot it mid-air for extra points. If a Hunter is on a Survivor, knock it off and kill it. Hunters can be bludgeoned to death. Explosions can stun them. They resemble Common Infected when walking and running, so watch for those proactively jumping and running. On Expert, shoving them preemptively is key as they are slightly in front of their sprite.
- 3Smokers: Stay close to another Survivor when you spot a Smoker. When a Smoker is screaming, take cover (press the cover button to crouch behind walls or objects) so it has to catch up, then strike. Smokers are often seen in the distance and leave green spores where they've been. If a Smoker is pulling a Survivor, shoot the Smoker, its tongue, or knock the Survivor off the tongue. You can even shoot the Survivor if necessary. If a Smoker fails to grab a Survivor, approach and shoot it for a guaranteed kill. A Survivor has only a second to react when being pulled. Chainsaws can cut the tongue.
- 4Boomers: If a Boomer is hiding, look for its large belly. When a Boomer is close, shove it away and shoot it, ensuring no other Survivors are nearby. If vomited on, don't panic; shove away any Infected until the slime clears. If a Boomer vomited on another Survivor, use a Pipe Bomb to draw away the new Horde, letting the Horde target the slimy Survivor. Bile Bombs do not draw away Boomer-drawn Hordes. Protect Survivors vomited on by Boomers. Shoot through walls if a Boomer is hiding. Male and Female Boomers emit different noises. They often ambush at door exits or corners, so make large turns and avoid hugging walls.
- 5Charger: Get out of the way if a Charger attempts to charge. Chargers cannot be shoved. Since they charge in a straight line, avoid running into them and kill them when they miss. Take out Chargers at long range. If they miss their charge, they often head straight for Survivors, so kill them before they can do more damage. Chargers cannot be stunned by explosions, except from explosive ammo.
- 6Spitter: Displace immediately upon hearing a Spitter. Spitters are fragile, so use long-range weapons. Avoid Acid Puddles at all costs. Be careful with Melee Weapons against Spitters and walk away immediately after killing one. Watch for their glowing drool. If a Spitter spits, shoot her before she can do it again.
- 7Jockey: Jockeys can be shoved in mid-air and off victims, though with greater difficulty. If leaped on, resist its movements and turn around so the Jockey faces the other Survivors. Grenade Launchers are effective. Jockeys do not receive extra damage from headshots. Aim slightly higher than eye-level when shoving. On Expert, they may land on their feet and claw immediately after being shoved. Sometimes, it's better to let a Jockey jump on you if a friend is close, so they can kill it before it starts doing damage.
- 8Tank: Listen for angry growling and snarling. Stay away from cars, furniture, and other large objects when a Tank is present. Light it on fire as soon as possible, as fire makes a considerable difference. Avoid throwing a Molotov at a Tank when other Survivors are near.
