Assault rifles are your bread and butter in Gears of War 2, offering a versatile balance of range, fire rate, and damage. The Lancer Assault Rifle is iconic, featuring a chainsaw bayonet for brutal melee executions. It's effective at medium range and provides good suppressive fire. The chainsaw is a one-hit kill on most standard Locust, but leaves you vulnerable during the animation. The Hammerburst Assault Rifle, favored by the Locust, offers higher accuracy and damage per shot than the Lancer, but with a slower fire rate and no chainsaw. It's excellent for precise headshots and sustained fire from cover. When using the Hammerburst, aim for the head to maximize its effectiveness. Both rifles benefit greatly from active reloads, increasing their damage output. Always keep an eye on your ammo count, as you'll be using these weapons constantly throughout the campaign. They are your primary tools for engaging the majority of Locust forces.
