How to Beat Forgotten Beasts

Learn strategies and tips to effectively combat and survive encounters with dangerous Forgotten Beasts in Dwarf Fortress. Prepare your fortress for these unique threats.

Stats / Weaknesses:

• Varied Physiology: Beasts can be made of anything from flesh and bone to smoke, fire, or even abstract concepts. Their physical composition dictates their resistances and vulnerabilities.
• Unique Abilities: Expect a wide range of special attacks, including webs, dust, fire, corrosive substances, sonic attacks, and more.
• Intelligence: Most Forgotten Beasts are unintelligent and will attack anything they perceive as a threat.

Phases:

1. Spawning: Forgotten Beasts appear in the caverns, often triggered by deep mining or specific world events.
2. Encounter: The beast will make its way towards your fortress, potentially through dug-out areas or even by destroying fortifications.
3. Combat: Direct confrontation is often dangerous due to their unpredictable nature.
4. Containment/Defeat: Strategies range from direct military engagement to trapping, flooding, or isolating the beast.

Strategy:

• Scouting: Identify the beast's composition and abilities as soon as possible. Use military squads to scout cavern entrances.
• Fortifications: Build strong walls and fortifications to funnel the beast into kill zones. Consider using drawbridges to block passages.
• Traps: Weapon traps, cage traps, and especially magma-based traps can be highly effective if the beast can be lured into them.
• Military: Equip your military with appropriate armor and weapons. Consider ranged units for beasts with dangerous close-range attacks. Be aware of resistances and immunities.
• Magma: If possible, lure the beast into a magma-filled chamber or flood its area with magma. This is often the most reliable way to defeat even the most dangerous beasts.
• Isolation: If direct combat or trapping is too risky, wall off the affected cavern sections to prevent the beast from reaching your fortress.
• Specific Countermeasures: For web-spitting beasts, ensure your dwarves have access to clear paths. For fire-breathing beasts, avoid flammable materials.
