A Castlevania: Symphony of the Night walkthrough for the Catacombs area, detailing how to defeat the Hellfire Beast, Granfaloon boss, and find items like the Ice Brand and Walk Armor.
We are in the Catacombs, the last area of the underground part of the castle. Once through the red doors, go down the brick stairs. At ground level, proceed to the room on the left, which is a save room with access to another room on the left. Pass the save room; in the next room, you'll find a Bloodstone on a pedestal, then a Cat-eye circlet in the breakable wall behind it.
The Bloodstone modifies sub-themes where enemies shoot blood when attacked or die, increasing healing from spells like Dark Metamorphosis. The Cat-eye circlet heals you when dealt 'cat damage,' a rare type of damage.
Leave this room, save, and proceed. In the next room, you'll encounter two Wereskeletons and a Bone Ark. Killing the skeletons holding the head on the platform makes it easier to hit.
The following room has several Gremlins filling the upper area with fire. This room has two doors leading to different paths; take the left path first.
In the next room, red coffins stand upright. Walking by them is safe, but hitting them releases Blood Skeletons. The subsequent small room contains a Life Max Up and a Heart Max Up.
After the small room, you'll face Grave Keepers and the Hellfire Beast. Grave Keepers are minor threats, but the Hellfire Beast requires effort. It uses elemental attacks, summons fire bursts, and shoots lightning from its arm. Avoid the fire by moving, and duck under the lightning. It's a straightforward fight.
In the next room, old, hunched figures holding lamps shoot lava. They are easy to defeat. Continue left.
This room features a diverging path upwards and a powerful Discus Lord. This enemy hits hard and deals significant damage. When close, land a few hits before it either swipes its disk or throws it. Dodge these attacks by jumping when there's an opening at the top. The Discus Lord doesn't move unless you get behind it. After defeating it, proceed through the opening at the top. Pots on the right contain a Ballroom Mask and a Heart Max Up. Break the wall on the left to find the Ice Brand sword, an upgrade from the Broadsword.
Return to the Discus Lord and defeat it again, then take the door on the left. You'll enter a lava room with Lossoths. After this, you'll be in a vertical room with more Gremlins. The room to the left contains only a candle with $1. Climb the vertical room to the top; the room on the right is a save room with another room after it containing the Walk Armor. This armor greatly increases defense and continues to improve with map coverage, likely making future armor obsolete. Save, then proceed to the boss fight in the room on the left.
GRANFALON
In a room full of skulls, you'll encounter the Granfalon, a boss formed from an amalgamation of bodies. To damage it, you must first attack its outer shell. This is an attrition battle as the Granfalon continuously rains bodies from its shell, impeding your path. Attack parts of the shell to expose the center where lethal damage can be dealt. Once parts of the shell are cleared, tentacles inside will shoot green beams.
Clearing shell sections stops the rain of bodies, reducing ground clutter. Platforms on the sides of the room allow you to use sub-weapons or escape the bodies. Once most of the shell is cleared, focus on the middle portion to defeat the Granfalon and receive a Life Max Up.
After the boss room, you'll find several rooms leading to the Mormegil sword. This sword has the same attack power as the Ice Brand but is a dark-type sword effective against Holy enemies.
