Learn how to beat Richter Belmont, a tough boss in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. This guide covers his attacks, weaknesses, and strategies.

Alright, you've made it to the Royal Keep! Before you head into what's arguably the toughest fight yet, make sure you save your game. The boss is waiting for you in the upper left area of the Keep.

Stats / Weaknesses:

  • Sub-weapons: Useless (deal no damage or he dodges with a charge attack).
  • Magic Spells: Useless (deal no damage or he dodges with a charge attack).
  • General Strategy: This fight is a battle of wits and anticipation, similar to the Doppleganger fight.

Phases:

  1. Phase 1: Richter uses his normal whip attack with the Vampire Killer, which has a surprisingly long reach. Getting close to attack will often result in you taking a few hits before you can land one. He also uses his flaming Vampire Killer and throws his axe sub-weapon when you jump.
  2. Phase 2 (Below 50% HP): After you've dealt about half of his health, Richter will enter a new phase. He'll use his ultimate Holy Water attack, Hydro Storm, which covers the entire room. To avoid taking damage, you'll need to transform into mist form. From this point on, he'll use his ultimate attacks more frequently, even without provocation.

Strategy:

  • Focus on dodging Richter's attacks. His whip has a long range, and he'll throw axes when you jump.
  • When you need to attack, look for small openings after he finishes a combo.
  • Use your mist form strategically, especially when he uses his Hydro Storm ultimate attack or any other powerful moves. Mist form makes you invincible to his attacks.
  • Be patient. This fight is about outlasting and outsmarting Richter, not rushing him down.
  • After you defeat Richter, you'll be treated to a cinematic and a cutscene where Alucard addresses you.
