First off, let's talk about how to actually get the Metal Detector. You've got a few options:

• You can meet this miner dude, Reg, in the Slate Mine Caves, which are south of Slatten Dale. He's willing to trade it for some of your stuff.
• If you're feeling a bit more aggressive, you can just take Reg out and loot it right off his body.
• Or, for a totally free option, head to coordinates 29.0E, 74.1N in Slatten Dale. There's a body in a lake there. Just gotta watch out for those nasty fish and then snag the detector from the corpse.

You'll probably run into Reg first after the game's intro. Honestly, keeping him alive is a good idea because traders can change their stock, and the detector is totally worth the trade. But hey, if you want it for free, that corpse in the lake is marked on the map. Just be aware you might run into some Outlaw patrols, but they usually leave you alone if you don't get too close.
